Early life

Martha Ankomah had her basic education in Presbyterian Junior High and went ahead at Labone Senior High School. She then furthered by studying marketing at Jayee University College in Accra. Aside from her childhood difficulties with her single mother as the first child, she was not discouraged from pursuing her bright future. Her challenges did nothing but gave her the opportunity to learn and succeed.


In 1994, Harry Amonoo, who is Martha’s cousin, introduced her into acting. He took her to the National Theatre where she joined the Harrisco Drama Group. It was then she began acting in stage dramas at Funworld and Kiddafest.

She also took part in a number of plays when she joined the Theatre Programme for School (TPS) during her days of high school.

Martha Ankomah then began to be seen in popular television series which included Suncity, St. James Hotel, All that glitters and Where is your mobile?

Knowing that higher heights could be reached, she kept climbing. She took part in the 2007 edition of the Next Movie Star. After 30 days of hard work and several rounds of eviction, she was left in the competition with five others (Lydia Forson, Uti Nwachukwu, Enoch Hammond, Ameh Lucy and Oshinuga Olufemi. Votes from the public, views from professionals about the housemates and in-house judges’ assessment were put together for her placement of the third position. She was noted for her versatility and good acting skills like audibility, gesticulation, projection and mimicking.

Martha Ankomah made it known in an interview with that, just a competition cannot make one a star but more hard work, learning from trainers and the grace of  God can make the star one wants to be.

Boldly, Ankomah has decided to shoot good Christian movies only. She does not believe in movies demonstrating witchcraft and juju because they do not help the nation in any way. She even encouraged drama students during her visit to POJOSS for a drama festival to write scripts that will encourage positive thinking. Due to this, she has become very selective of scripts that have a good impact on people.

Aside acting


In 2013, Ankomah officially opened her ultra-modern beauty salon located at Tesano, called ‘Martha’s place’. Some services offered are bridal, makeup, pedicure, manicure, facial treatment, acrylic, waxing, barbering, cosmetics, and others.

Social Life

She runs a charitable organization called Martha Ankomah Foundation. She set this foundation to cater for the needs of the less privileged, which was inspired by her struggles in the past. This foundation joined the Autism Ambassadors of Ghana in 2016 to celebrate the World Autism Awareness Day at the Efua-Sutherland Children’s park in Accra.

Awards and recognitions

  • In 2010, she was nominated for most promising actress (Africa Movie Academy Awards) – Sin of the soul
  • 2012, she had the nomination for best young actress (Africa Movie Academy Awards) – Somewhere in Africa
  • In 2013, she was honored by the University of Education, Winneba as part the activities of the 20th anniversary the SRC for her contribution to Ghana’s entertainment industry.
